Abstract
|
|
|
Carumonam is a new monocyclic ¥â-lactam antibiotic which has a potent antimicrobial activity against a number of gram-negative bacteria.
The im vitro antibacterial activity of carumonam against gram-negative clinical isolates was studied in comparison with that of aztreonam and other drugs by the agar dilution method.
The clinical efficacy was evaluated in 27 patients with infection; 10 cases of urinary tract infection, 14 cases of respiratory tract infection and 3 cases of bacteremia.
1) In vitro study, carumonam has an excellent antibacterial activity like aztreonam against aerobic gram-negative bacilli, especially S.Marcescens and k-pneumoniae.
2) Carumonam was effective in 9 out of 10 cases with urinary tract infection. The organisms were eradicated in 7 out of 8 cases from which microorganisms were and one patients had superinfection with X.maltophilia.
3) It was effective in 11 out of 14 cases with a rate of effectiveness of 73% in respiratory tract infection and 2 out of 3 cases in bacteremia.
4) The adverse effect was observed in 1 case with transient elevation of SGOT and SGPT.
